Through combining design thinking with exploratory rigor, Instance is interested in projects that aim to allow visionary ideas gain strength and vitality through an inherently collaborative and creative process.
Instance works on publication design, brand identity, information graphics, books and exhibition graphics, and collaborates on websites and new media. Instance operates on a flexible studio model, scaling resources for each project with a network of talented consultants and colleagues.

BACKGROUND Started in 2007 (and in earnest in 2009) and based in Brooklyn, Instance is the design practice of Lisa Maione. She works with educators, architects, community organizations, artists, researchers, non-profits and writers. Prior to going out on her own, Lisa spent time as an assistant art director at the architecture/design magazine Metropolis and as a designer at several design studios including mgmt. design, Wolff Olins and Pentagram. With extensive experience working with architects, she has worked on several architectural competitions projects and integrated design efforts both as a graphic design consultant and as a core team member.
A part-time lecturer at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City, she teaches in the School of Constructed Environments and the School of Design Strategies. She is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Graphic Design.
